I think the shock on Sherlocks face was a combo of the fact that JM killed himself, rather than being killed by someone else, and him knowing that he is going to have to jump off the building.Īlso, I think Sherlock placed the tiny hidden camera on the roof because when we first see Moriarty on the roof, it's looks like its filmed with a fish-lens, giving viewers the impression that we are looking through a camera. (And yes, earlier in the episode he has a gun to one of the assassins and the assassin still got killed but Sherlock was in a vulnerable position being handcuffed that a real trained assassin could have taken the gun away) I know Sherlock touches Moriarty earlier on the roof, but he is in complete control, practically about to push JM off the roof, and anyone watching could see that there was no imminent threat. He shakes Sherlocks hand (the second time in the episode that the camera zooms in on a handshake) then offs-himself taking away Sherlocks advantage and forcing him jump. JM realized that SH knew this fact, probibly when Sherlock explained that he was not one of the angels, and was left with no choice but to kill himself, just to take away any hope SH had. Since the assassins still thought that Sherlock had the key code, SH figured the assassins would kill anyone who might harm Sherlock, even JM.
